Studio Apartment with Limited Closet: How Do You Organize?

This time I visited the home of Ms. A, who lives in a studio apartment and has such problems as “I can’t put away my belongings.” ” I don’t have enough storage space.” It was a tough job, but A-san and I made some improvements, I think.

A-san’s Background and Requests at Studio Apartment

Age and Occupation: Office lady of 30s. Working in an apparel company living on her own.
Particular about: She knows she has a lot of clothes, but she can’t just throw them away because of her occupational habit.
Requests: She doesn’t want to add any more shelves in her room, but wants to make the room as clean as possible.
Hobby: Workout, painting
Biggest problem: She has an overabundance of clothes. She wants to do something about closet.

The floor plan looks like this・・Objectively speaking, the closet looks quite enough for a studio apartment, but the amount of clothes is overwhelming. So this time I tried to clean up only the closet and clothes hangers (in yellow) out of this.

Before: Overflowing Clothing

Here’s what it looks like … well, it looks like a disaster.

Clothes Hanger Rack
Upper Right End in Closet
Lower Right End in Closet

Upper Middle Corner in Closet
Lower Middle in Closet
Left End in Closet

As you can see, the clothing is not even breathing. In addition to this, there were a several pieces of clothing overflown in a box.

The Biggest Challenge: How to Deal with Reality

Empty and Sort

The first step is to figure out what’s in the box and sort it.

Take Out Plastic Cases

First, I took out all the wardrobe plastic cases.

Checked the contents as I fold them. There I found:
   - Sweaters and other bulky items are taking up space.
   - Tops and pants are stored in the same place.
   - The masks and other items that have nothing to do with clothing are taking up space.

We stopped here for now.

Take out what’s on the hanger.

Next, I took out everything that was on hangers, sorting through them. The category is as follows.

  • long coats
  • dresses that cannot be folded
  • jackets
  • pants
  • skirts
  • shirts

At this point, the small studio apartment was in a state of “Are we going to move out now?”

Take out all the rest

Surprisingly, there were so many of them.
Belts, bags and linens・・But I didn’t give up. I took everything out anyway, emptied the closet and cleaned it first. There was no longer any room left for me to step foot in!

Work to put them back

Hang things

Hang the items that must be hung on hangers first. The trick is to hang the longest items on the left side first and is to put them in order of length. The items that were on clothes hangers are gathered here!

  • long coats
  • dresses that cannot be folded
  • jackets
  • pleated skirts・・Up to here, hangers were absolutely needed.

At this point, I gave up on putting pants, foldable skirts, and dresses on hangers.

Restore plastic cases

Next, I put the plastic cases back in. However, I reduced the number by two to make more space.

How could I reduce the number?

  • Removed masks, towels, and other mixed items.
  • Folded clothes neatly.
  • Took out bulky knitwear.

What I couldn’t fit in the closet, I left as is for now. As a result, the closet on the right side looks like this.

Next, I worked on the middle and left closets in the same way.

I moved the coats from the clothes hangers to the closet, and put together the shirts that were less oppressive. And here we are. It’s still tight, but this was what we could do best.

We had to dispose some small things that could not be restored. And the below is what we ended up with. (There’s no space in the hallway to stand back and take a picture of the whole view, so I took a split shot.

It looks like they are kind of organized.

Summary

Almost a day of work. Two plastic cases were disposed. About 10 items of clothing were sent for disposal.

  • Sorted out the mix of clothing and non-clothing items.
  • Jackets, pants, tops, and other items in the same category are grouped together.
  • Items that can be wrinkled, such as underwear, home wear and training wear were prioritized for drawers.
  • Took the bulky knitwear out of the storage case.
  • Folded and stacked pants directly on shelves.
  • Grouped shirts on hangers in the living space to make less pressure.

The clothing is still on the verge of suffocation. However, Ms. A seemed satisfied with the considerable improvement. It may be the eternal challenge to determine how much you keep your stuff against the limited space you have. Although it may appear “disorganized” to somebody else, it is a progress as long as you are satisfied.
