Online Trading: Take Pictures to Sell!

Today, let me show some tips to take pictures “to sell” your items online.

When you want to sell your items, you need to find buyers. Then, try your best to take photos that will make people want to buy them!

“The photos that make people want to buy” doesn’t mean photos that hide something inconvenient. The photos must accurately convey the condition of the item as if you were holding the actual item in your hands.

Make the Background Simple!

A simple background is essential to make your item look good. First of all, think about the contrast with the item.

For instance:

  • Light-colored items on a dark-colored table
  • White tableware etc. on a dark-colored tablecloth
  • Dark-colored items in front of white walls, etc.

Don’t ever take in the messiness of the house in the background. If there is nowhere else, you can use the floor or tatami mats.

I often use a navy blue 100% polyester fabric of about 2 square meters (not so expensive). It doesn’t wrinkle, and sometimes adds a sense of luxury.

Light is Important.

If you don’t have photography skills, no problem! Neither do I. Only you have to do is to take pictures that are as close to the real item as possible, such as size, color, textures and sometimes scratches and stains. For this reason, light is important. It changes the impression considerably.

Here are some patterns I actually took pictures of my alarm clock changing the conditions.

1.Placed on a table using light from a window

2.Placed at the corner by the same window, but the shadow bothers me.

3.Used cell phone’s light to eliminate shadows. Better?

4.Placed on a stool in the back room using the room light: Added an LED stand light.

5.Less reflection?

6.Above the outdoor unit under the eaves. Surprisingly good.

See, the same item gives different impressions according to the setting and the lighting.

  • Are the colors close to the real thing?
  • Are the letters clear or blurred?
  • Is the light reflecting off the glass?
  • Are there any shadows in the way?

In any case, take some shots, not just one. Good pictures depend on various conditions such as the type of light, strength, angle, and the time of day, or sometimes the materials and textures of the items themselves. !

Glass, metal, and other shiny objects reflect, so try shining the light from in front of them or shooting from an angle to change them.

Surprisingly, I feel that the light near the window on a cloudy day gives me the most natural and good shots, so I choose cloudy days as my shooting days. However, not all days are cloudy, so find your best conditions having fun with it. That will bring your best shots!

Take Partial Shots

The most important thing is to accurately convey the condition of the item. For this, partial shots are effective in addition to a whole picture. Sometimes you have to focus on stains or scratches, and write them honestly in your comments.

  • Take partial shots with the information (label, tag, etc.)
  • If there are any stains or scratches, take close-up shots so potential buyers can see them.

A few tips

Just a little effort will convey the sincerity of the seller.

Polish → Wash or polish as clean as possible.

Use a magnifying glass in front of the camera lens→ Magnify the letters printed or engraved on metals or crystals to show the information.

Hang→hang clothes to give a feel for the silhouette of a garment.

Take pictures from various angles→When you pick up a product at a store, you look at the back and the bottom, don’t you? Take pictures like that.

Now, take some pictures first and see how they turn out!

You’ve come this far. You’re almost there!
